County Mayo, ireland
My maternal grandfather's family emigrated from County Mayo around the time of the Potato Famine, we believe. I've been there on three occasions to try and trace some of the family history, although with a name as common as 'Moore', it's not the easiest task in the world!
The pictures below were taken when I stayed in a wonderfully idyllic and isolated cottage near Belmullet, in April 2010 and again in April 2014. I did a far-reaching exploration of the West Mayo area, including the breathtaking Achill Island. In terms of getting away from all traces of modern life, it's hard to beat this far-flung corner of Ireland. The cottage (pictured in the first two photos) can be booked here. |
