Famed for its striking blue-green water, the river Soča ('Isonzo' in Italian) runs close to Slovenia's western border with Italy. It was the site of the twelve battles of the Isonzo on the Italian front in World War I and is today a mecca for historians, walkers and river-sports fans alike.
