The Day
This is the best internet source of daily news for children and teenagers. Not only does the website provide three current news stories in digestible form every day, but there are also talking points, activities and links to more in-depth sources related to each news item. You can print off pdf versions of all the stories and send comments. Quite simply, brilliant!

Spellodrome
In addition to Times Spelling Bee, we use Spellodrome at St John's College School as part of the day to day curriculum. This website enables children of all ages to master their spelling through independent learning, using both spelling drills and games to add variety and an appropriate level of challenge to the learning process. Teachers can set their own spelling lists or ready-made ones which correspond to particular spelling patterns and rules. Progress is easily monitored by teachers, parents and pupils via automated mark sheets and achievement certificates. Great value for money, especially if you buy a joint subscription with its sister site Mathletics.

Brainpop
Attractive and user-friendly resource both for teachers and for independent learners. Animated videos introduce the lesson objective and activities can then be completed live, on printed worksheets or via email. The website covers all subject areas and levels of ability, so don't be put off by the look of the animations - the content is not as basic as it may seem at first glance!
Storybird
Superb story-writing software. Create your own picture books using the intuitive software and choose from hundreds of different illustrators' artwork to inspire your story. Then download as a pdf or order your very own paperback or hardback version from the Storybird shop.

The best resource out there for planning debates and writing persuasive arguments / articles. Constantly updated, so current affairs topics feature prominently. A must for scholars and anybody with school interviews on the horizon.

Khan Academy
A totally free video library of lessons for use in the classroom or for independent learning. The content is heavily weighted towards Science and Maths, but will certainly expand into other subject areas as it evolves. Particularly useful if you want to revise a topic that you struggled with first time round, as the videos give clear explanations with simple visuals.
Appshed
Create and share your own apps, which are compatible with Mac & Android devices. (You can even publish them for the benefit of the wider public!)
Reading Eggs
A fabulous online library and comprehension resource linked to Mathletics and Spellodrome. Pupils sign in with their usual Mathletics log in and can access comprehension games and hundreds of e-books, all suited to individuals' reading ability.
